Since immemorial time, man has been attracted by the caves, both as temporary or permanent shelter or as religious magical places dedicated to the worship of the gods or enchanted enemies, and as antechamber of hell or place of activities related to black magic. It is also a simple place that catches anyone’s attention and arouses curiosity, inviting us to a simple curious peek, to a sportive tourist visit or to a patient and determined work of study and scientific research.
The island of Sao Jorge offers several volcanic cavities to practice speleology. It is on this island that you can find the largest vertical cave (algar) in the Azores and one of the largest in Portugal. Here there are many other and extremely beautiful cavities of easy access.
On the Full Day program, all participants have a basic training in techniques of rope maneuvering, to get familiarized with the equipment and handling it. On the half day program, you don´t use ropes maneuvers because all caves are of easy access to visitors.
All through the route you are monitored by the Aventour guides, who handle the ropes to descend as well as monitor the safety of each participant.
