Adventure Island

Go canyoning and visit the mythical Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. Finish your adventure with a refreshing dip in a natural pool on the island of São Jorge in the Azores.

This is a multi-activity program that offers the discovery of the island of São Jorge in a full day of adventure in contact with nature.

CANYONING BAPTISM

This program begins with a new experience that will give you a lot of excitement in contact with nature, a Canyoning Baptism.

You don't need any training in canyoning or adventure sports to take part in “Canyoning Baptism” with Aventour Azores. This program is aimed at those who have no experience in this sport.

The program begins with a briefing on the activity. Our instructors will introduce you to your PPE (personal protective equipment) and how to handle it correctly, as well as covering rappelling techniques, progression on the waterline and signposting.

Throughout the course, participants will be monitored by duly accredited Aventour guides, who will set up the descent lines (rappels), as well as all the safety procedures to be followed.

During the progression along the waterline (stream) and in addition to abseiling down the waterfalls, we'll do some jumping into waterholes (optional), as well as overcoming natural obstacles in the stream bed using some climbing techniques.

Our “Canyoning Baptism” courses are made up of vertical drops of no more than 20 meters. The aim is for you to enjoy a new experience, as well as all the natural surroundings during the course, always combined with good humor, conviviality and safety.

HIKKING

This trail was once used by the Caldeira de Santo Cristo’s inhabitants to go to the south of the island, including Calheta.

During the descent, we can see a variety of endemic plants that populate this valley. In addition to the endemic flora, there are many birds, cows grazing along the trail and goats, that after the earthquake 1980 became wild.

In this valley there is a large river system that is noticed by the sound of water, which gets louder as we descend along the trail. Here, the streams run throughout the whole year due to the surrounding mountain groundwater and some plants that retain water, such as "Sphagnum".

On reaching Caldeira Cima, we will stop for a snack and have your first experience: Cascading (optional). This activity consists of descending waterfalls using abseiling techniques. Although this activity is optional, we recommend and encourage you to try it, because it is a not to be missed experience. After this refreshing activity, we proceed our Trekking until Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo.
