On the way to the Western edge of San Jorge island we’ll go through a gravel road, followed by a dirt road, making use, sometimes, of the trails that surround this end of the island.
We’ll pay a visit to the old Whale watch place on the edge of Rosais, where we will have a privileged view of the lighthouse of Rosais and of the central islands.
The visit to the lighthouse of Ponta dos Rosais nowadays is closed due to local security issues. Opened in 1957, it was considered the most modern lighthouse in Portugal with the best facilities.
From the top of this cliff where the island of San Jorge ends, which takes almost the form of a promontory, the guests enjoy the outstanding landscape. From this place, on the top of a 200 meters cliff we can see the Atlantic Ocean divided in North and South. You can see blue calm water everywhere, only with the islands of
Faial and Pico at about 15 kilometers away. All the rest is sea, stretching to the horizon.
We will come back by another way that will take us to the Rosais Parish.
